Alberto Pasini 1826-1899

Alberto Pasini was born in Busseto, but after his father died when Pasini was just two years old, he and his mother moved to Parma. Aged 17, he enrolled in the Accademia di Belli Arti of Parma and was also supported in his training by his uncle Antonio Pasini, a painter and manuscript illuminator. In 1852-53, he travelled to Paris where he entered the circle of the artists of the Barbizon School, spending time in the studio of Eugene Ciceri and then Theodore Chassériau. In 1853 he also exhibited at the Salon. He would later exhibit at the Exposition Universelle in 1859, 1863, 1864 and 1899, and in Vienna in 1873.

In 1855, Pasini travelled to the Middle East for the first time, on Prosper Bourée’s diplomatic mission through Greece and Persia. He returned to Paris, before travelling once more to the East in the late 1860s, spending time in Constantinople (1868-9), Syria and Lebanon. The experiences he had during these years had a profound effect on the artist, shaping the Oriental focus which would dominate his artistic production. In 1870 he settled near Turin, but undertook further travel later in his life, visiting Athens, Spain and Venice.
