The Nationalmuseum Stockholm has acquired paintings by French artists Louis Gauffier (1762-1801) and Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916).
Gauffier's Ulysses recognises Achilles amongst the daughters of Lycomedes dates from 1791 and was presented at the Paris Salon in that same year. It is an exemplary picture representing the type of mythological subject with which the artist established his reputation.
View of the Island of Capri (1853) was the first painting presented by Harpignies at the Paris Salon, an ambitious work that reflects the fashion for Italian subjects among French painters in the mid-19th century.
